US Supreme Court will not hear Cleveland mass murderer Anthony Sowell’s appeal

Anthony Sowell

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday said it will not review Anthony Sowell’s appeal, after the state’s top court upheld the Cleveland mass murderer’s convictions and death sentence.

The Supreme Court’s denial of Sowell’s case is just the latest in what will be a litany of challenges and court decisions in the years to come.

Sowell, 58, is on death row for killing 11 women and burying their bodies at his Imperial Avenue home on the city’s southeast side.

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled 5-2 in December and rejected Sowell’s argument for a new trial on the grounds that the judge who presided over Sowell’s 2011 trial had improperly closed a hearing to the public. Ohio Justice Terrence O’Donnell wrote that while the judge did not correctly document all

Norway’s top court rejects mass murderer Breivik’s appeal

Neo-Nazi mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011, will take his case over his “inhumane” prison conditions to the European Court of Human Rights, his lawyer said yesterday after exhausting all legal options in Norway.

Breivik, who for safety reasons has been held apart from other inmates since his arrest in 2011, has complained about his lengthy isolation. He wants the Norwegian state to be found guilty of violating the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits “inhumane” and “degrading” treatment. But Norway’s highest court, the Supreme Court, yesterday refused to hear his case.

“None of the elements in the Breivik appeal have any chance of winning,” the court said in a statement.

“Neither does the case raise any questions about the interpretation of the European Convention that haven’t already been sufficiently clarified by the practices of the European Court of Human Rights,” it added.

Breivik’s lawyer argued that his

Norway Supreme Court turns down mass murderer Breivik’s appeal

OSLO The Norwegian Supreme Court will not take up an appeal lodged by Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik protesting against his prison conditions, the court said on Thursday.

Breivik was seeking to overturn a March decision by a Norwegian appeals court that ruled that his near-isolation in a three-room cell respected human rights.

The anti-Muslim far-right extremist killed 77 people in Norway’s worst peacetime atrocity in July 2011. He killed eight with a bomb in Oslo and then gunned down 69, many of them teenagers, at a youth meeting of the then-ruling Labour Party.

His appeal had raised dismay, and some laughter, among Norwegians taken aback by Breivik’s complaints of cold coffee and microwaved meals he said were “worse than waterboarding”.

“The Supreme Court’s appeal commission has unanimously decided on June 8, 2017 to not

Friend of Dylann Roof’s to appeal 27-month sentence for role in Emanuel shooting case

Joey Meek, a friend of mass killer Dylann Roof’s, plans to appeal his more than two-year sentence for not reporting the attack at Emanuel AME Church, court documents stated Tuesday.

Meek, 22, of Lexington County was sentenced last week to 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to misprision of a felony and lying to federal agents.

His attorney, Deborah Barbier of Columbia, filed a notice to appeal the term to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson declined to comment.

The grounds for an appeal after a guilty plea are more limited than in trial convictions. The basic paperwork in Meek’s case did not lay out his reasons.

In exchange for a potentially lighter sentence, Meek had agreed to help prosecutors in Roof’s hate crimes trial, but the proceeding ended earlier this year with Roof’s death sentence and without

Cleveland mass murderer Anthony Sowell has until May to appeal to US Supreme Court

Anthony Sowell

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The U.S. Supreme Court has extended the deadline for Cleveland mass murderer Anthony Sowell to appeal his murder convictions and death sentence.

Sowell, 57, was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to die for the murders of 11 women whose bodies were discovered in his home on Imperial Avenue.

The Ohio Supreme Court rejected his appeal late last year, the last major step in a process that will likely see Sowell’s case stay in the courts for years to come.

Sowell is expected to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review his case, a move many death row inmates nationwide do as they challenge their cases while awaiting execution.

Defendants have 90 days from when a mandate is issued to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case. While the Ohio Supreme Court issued its ruling in

Mass killer Breivik makes Nazi salute at rights appeal case

SKIEN, Norway Mass killer Anders Behring Breivik made a Nazi salute at the start of a court case on Tuesday at which Norway is trying to overturn a ruling that it has violated his human rights by keeping him isolated since he massacred 77 people in 2011.

Breivik, wearing a black suit and tie, raised his right arm to make the flat-handed Nazi-style salute as he entered the court in a converted gym at the jail where he lives in a three-room cell.

It was similar to the salute he gave at a lower court in March, when the judge ended up agreeing that the Norwegian state had violated a ban on “inhuman and degrading” treatment under the European Convention on Human Rights by keeping him too

Norwegian mass murderer Breivik in human rights appeal case

Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a bombing and shooting rampage in 2011, is returning to court this week as the government appeals a ruling that his isolation in prison breaches the European Convention on Human Rights.

The 37-year-old right-wing extremist, who admitted to the killings that Prime Minister Erna Solberg has called “one of the darkest days in Norwegian history,” was convicted of mass murder and terrorism in 2012 and given a 21-year prison sentence that can be extended for as long as he’s deemed dangerous to society. Legal experts say he will likely be locked up for life.

Breivik has often complained about his treatment and prison conditions.

Last year, he sued the government, saying his solitary confinement, frequent strip searches and the fact that he was often handcuffed during the early part of his incarceration violated his human rights. He is
