What to Watch on Wednesday: ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ is a riveting look at a shocking crime

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (10 p.m., FX) – A riveting new miniseries from the creative team behind “The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story” that looks at the 1997 murder of fashion icon Gianni Versace – but it goes way deeper than just that senseless, shocking act. The story is also an examination of the life of spree killer Andrew Cunanan, who murdered Versace on the steps outside his Miami mansion for unknown reasons after murdering two men in Minneapolis, one man in Chicago and a man in New Jersey. Versace is a relatively small part of the narrative, and not even the most interesting part. The episodes involving the Chicago and Minneapolis murders (the action is presented, for the most part, in reverse chronological order) I found somehow more captivating and heartbreaking than the events that took place in Miami (perhaps because I was

The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story Review: FX’s True Crime Drama Is Addictive And Unsettling

The Assassination of Gianni Versace covers the before, during, and after of Gianni Versace’s murder by spree killer Andrew Cunanan on the steps of Versace’s South Beach residence back in 1997. The case itself is famous and the show doesn’t dance around delivering the ugly deed. While the big death happens relatively early on, Versace’s end is only the starting point for the way the show is telling this story. Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss) targets world-renowned fashion designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) at his home, and his death shocks the world. Gianni’s sister Donatella (the magnificent Penelope Cruz) and partner Antonio D’Amico (Ricky Martin) occupy important parts in Versace’s life before and after his death, but they’re not always on the same page.

Versace, killer connection gets spotlight in ‘Assassination’

Beauty is a beast on the new season of “American Crime Story.”

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace” captures the final moments of the beloved, internationally known fashion designer (Edgar Ramirez, “Zero Dark Thirty”) at the hands of spree killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss, “Glee”) on July 15, 1997.

It then backtracks in increasingly large arcs of time to show how the two might have crossed paths and what led to that deadly encounter.

Executive producer and director Ryan Murphy relies on “Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History,” a book Versace’s family condemns, to spin his story.

The show captures Versace’s sumptuous lifestyle — his Miami Beach home is a gorgeous villa, impeccably decorated, with servants who wait at attention — as well as Versace’s enormous heart, kindness and passion for his work.

Cunanan, on the other hand, was at best a sociopath, who skated on

How we covered the real assassination of Gianni Versace – WGRZ

I had completely forgotten Andrew Cunanan. But now, Ryan Murphy’s latest offering in his anthology drama, American Crime Story, is dredging up the ugly memories. Thanks for that, Ryan.

If you know the name, it’s because Cunanan is the spree killer who assassinated Italian fashion prince Gianni Versace, who was shot at the gates of his Miami Beach mansion on July 15, 1997, as he returned from his usual morning coffee-and-paper run to the News Cafe just down Ocean Drive.

Versace, who died at 50, was the last victim of Cunanan.

During nearly three months in the summer of 1997, Cunanan killed five men (besides Versace, they were

‘Assassination of Gianni Versace’ Team on Exploring ‘What Went Wrong’ That Made Andrew Cunanan Kill

The latest installment of FX and Ryan Murphy’s anthology drama “American Crime Story,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” starts with the murder of the fashion icon (played here by Edgar Ramirez), but that is just the jumping off point for a deep dive into a handful of horrific crimes committed by Andrew Cunanan (played by Darren Criss) in the 1990s.

“This case is famous because of the murder of Versace,” executive producer Tom Rob Smith said at FX’s Television Critics Assn. press tour Friday in Pasadena, Calif. “That’s all I knew, but it was the tip of the iceberg.”

Smith, alongside executive producers Murphy, Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson used Maureen Orth’s 1999 book “Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in US History” as research and the basis for the nine-episode series.

Since Cunanan’s victims were no longer alive to confirm exactly how
