Colquitt County accused mass killer gets new attorney

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) – An accused Colquitt County mass killer has a new attorney.

According to reports, Melinda Ryals will be the new counsel for Jeffrey Peacock.

Peacock is accused of fatally shooting five people in May 2016 at a home on Rossman Dairy Road. Police also say he killed three dogs and set fire to the house to cover up the crime.

Burt Baker, Peacock’s former attorney, withdrew from the case in October.

Ryals has been a member of the capital defender’s office since 2013.

Prosecutors announced last year they would seek the death penalty against Peacock. No trial date has been announced.

Orange County jailhouse informant takes plea deal

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A self-styled killer at the heart of the Orange County jailhouse informant scandal has been sentenced in a plea deal that will free him in about four years.

Oscar Moriel pleaded guilty on Friday to attempted murder and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. However, he’s been in custody since 2006 and will get credit for time served.

KABC-TV reports that Moriel, an informant since 2009, got the deal even though he claims to have killed a half-dozen people. On Friday, prosecutors cited his help in a crackdown on the Mexican Mafia prison gang.

Allegations that Orange County authorities routinely used snitches to illegally question people in jail have dismantled more than a dozen cases. The allegations led to

Battle over Charles Manson’s body has become ‘like a circus,’ Kern County official says

Even in death, Charles Manson is proving to be troublesome for authorities.

A month after the notorious mass murderer died in a Bakersfield hospital, several people are poised tomake a claim on his remains. This has put the final disposition of Manson in limbo, setting the stage for a decidedly macabre and unusual legal battle.

With so many parties vying for the body, Kern County lawyers filed paperwork in Los Angeles County Superior Court in hopes of determining who should receive the remains.

The Kern County coroner doesn’t want to release the remains to the wrong person and end up getting sued, the county’s attorney said.
