Reagan: Despite what you may think, it’s still not guns

During the intense media coverage of last Wednesday’s tragic events in Parkland, Florida, I was shocked to hear it was the 18th school shooting so far this year.

18. In 45 days.

That sounds terrible.

That sounds like a huge American crisis that needs to be addressed immediately by our great leaders in Washington.

But that 18 number, which the anti-gun lobby in the media has emphasized without going into the details of the individual incidents, is highly misleading.

None of those previous shootings was anything like the horrible one on Wednesday that left 17 students and teachers dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The year’s worst previous shooting, which happened in Kentucky at a high school less than a month ago, left two students dead and 14 wounded by gunfire.

The only other death was a single murder that occurred on a college

Colorado GOP lawmakers seek repeal of magazine ban despite New Year’s Eve mass shooting

Republican advocates of the right to bear arms with high-capacity magazines aim to legalize them again despite Colorado’s latest mass shooting.

On New Year’s Eve, Matthew Riehl ambushed Douglas County sheriff’s deputies, killing Zackari Parrish, a father of two, and wounding six other people before he was shot and killed.

It was the second time in five years that Colorado has been traumatized by a lone madman wielding a military-style rifle and other guns.

James Holmes took a heavier toll in 2012. He killed 12 people and wounded 58 others at an Aurora theater as moviegoers desperately tried to hide or flee.

Both men owned gun magazines capable of holding 100 rounds of ammunition. Colorado lawmakers banned such magazines after the Aurora shooting, but Riehl bought his in Wyoming legally along with a cache of other weapons from a gun store in Laramie.

He fired a barrage of bullets from his apartment bedroom when deputies

Memorial to mass murderer Alan Hawe WILL go ahead despite distress to victims’ family

A memorial service for mass murderer Alan Hawe WILL go ahead tonight at the church where his victims are buried, despite the distress it is likely to cause.

Hawe slaughtered his wife, Clodagh and their three sons, Liam, Niall and Ryan a year ago.

He was buried with them in the grounds of St Mary’s Church, Castlerahan in Co Cavan, until he was finally exhumed in May following a series of requests from Clodagh’s heartbroken mother, Mary Coll, and sister, Jacqueline Connolly.

But tonight Hawe’s parents and other family members are expected to travel from Kilkenny for a service for the killer.

Fr Felim Kelly, who parishioners believe will celebrate the Mass, was a close friend of Hawe.

Niall, little Ryan, Liam and Clodagh. Their happiness was wiped out by Alan Hawe

In the aftermath of the massacre, curate Fr Kelly helped arrange to have him buried with his helpless victims,

Despite complaints, Little Rock nightclub stays open after mass shooting

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Associated Press) – An Arkansas nightclub were 28 people were wounded in a shooting during a rap concert remained open despite dozens of civil and criminal complaints that the city of Little Rock could have used to sanction or close the business.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the complaints include two previous shootings outside the club, Power Ultra Lounge. The club also held a restaurant mixed drink permit, despite promoting itself as a concert venue.

City Manager Bruce Moore said he should’ve known about the previous incidents, but officials never made the connection. Moore said he’ll appoint a police liaison to a criminal abatement committee to help improve communication.

No charges have been filed in the July 1 shooting during the concert by rapper Ricky Hampton. Hampton and his body guard have been arrested on unrelated weapons charges.
