Woman shot in head at Vegas concert set to leave hospital: ‘I will come back stronger’

An Arizona mother of two who was shot in the head during the Oct. 1 massacre in Las Vegas is set to leave the hospital today after suffering such a severe brain injury that doctors didn’t think she would survive.

“On Oct. 1, a part of me changed,” Jovanna Calzadillas said haltingly at a news conference Wednesday, nearly four months after she was shot in a sniper’s attack that killed 58 people — the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

“My kids and my family, I will not quit on them, and I will not quit on myself,” said Jovanna Calzadillas. “Even though I will not be the same Jovanna, I will come back stronger.”

Jovanna, 30, was shot in the head during Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas on October 1. Her brain injury was so severe that doctors did not expect her to live and they spoke with Jovanna’s family about possibly removing her from life support.

Woman shot in the head in Las Vegas mass shooting to leave hospital

PHOENIX — An Arizona woman who was shot in the head during the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history is preparing to leave a Phoenix hospital after what doctors are calling a miraculous recovery.

Jovanna Calzadillas, her husband and doctors are expected to speak at a news conference Wednesday before she heads home.

Barrow Neurological Institute officials say Calzadillas’ injuries were so critical that they talked to her family about removing life support.

She was brought to the hospital two and a half weeks after the Oct. 1 Las Vegas shooting.

Authorities say gunman Stephen Paddock fired on a crowd attending an outdoor country music festival from his room on the 32nd floor of a resort.

He killed 58 people and wounded hundreds of others before killing himself.
