An inquest into the death of Manchester Arena mass murderer Salman Abedi was opened and adjourned by a coroner today in a court hearing lasting five minutes.
A Greater Manchester Police detective told senior Manchester coroner Nigel Meadows that Abedi, 22, detonated an ‘improvised explosive device’ in the City Room at the Arena at 10.31pm on May 22.
Detective Chief Inspector David Warren, reading from a statement during the brief hearing at the coroner’s court at Manchester Town Hall, said the force of the resulting explosion ‘severely disrupted’ his body and he died at the scene.
The City Room within the venue was described as a large foyer area immediately outside the Arena with exits to the underground car park and via a concourse to Manchester Victoria railway station.
At the time of the explosion, the court heard it was full of people leaving the building after a concert by US singer Ariana Grande.
