Orange County jailhouse informant takes plea deal

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A self-styled killer at the heart of the Orange County jailhouse informant scandal has been sentenced in a plea deal that will free him in about four years.

Oscar Moriel pleaded guilty on Friday to attempted murder and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. However, he’s been in custody since 2006 and will get credit for time served.

KABC-TV reports that Moriel, an informant since 2009, got the deal even though he claims to have killed a half-dozen people. On Friday, prosecutors cited his help in a crackdown on the Mexican Mafia prison gang.

Allegations that Orange County authorities routinely used snitches to illegally question people in jail have dismantled more than a dozen cases. The allegations led to

Orange County father of Las Vegas mass shooting victim files wrongful death lawsuit – KABC

The father of a Huntington Beach woman killed in the Las Vegas shooting massacre has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the operators of the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort, Live Nation and the manufacturer of bump stocks.

Andrea Castilla, 28, was one of the 58 people killed at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, when a gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay.

“I just kept looking at her and kissing her and holding her hand and praying that she was going to make it,” said Athena Castilla, Andrea’s sister.

She was at the concert with Andrea and recalls holding her bleeding head, trying to get to a hospital. Andrea was at the concert, celebrating her birthday with her boyfriend, sister and a friend, when terror struck.

“I miss being with her and we just had so many other memories and plans to have ahead of us,” Athena said.

Andrea’s father,

‘The face of evil’: Worst mass shooter in Orange County history sentenced to life in prison

A former tugboat captain who carried out Orange County’s worst mass shooting was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison Friday for killing eight people at a Seal Beach salon in 2011.

The decision, which followed lengthy hearings that included testimony from Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, was criticized by law enforcement leaders, who said Dekraai deserves to be executed.

“The criminal justice system here in Orange County has largely failed you,” Goethals said
