Sacramento Police Practice Mass Shooting Response At Golden 1 …

Members of the Sacramento Police SWAT team had a different start to their morning on Wednesday. The department surprised officers with a mass shooting drill at the Golden 1 Center.

Sacramento Police Lieutenant Bryce Heinlein says, it was difficult to pull off, but the drill was kept secret from the officers.

“They were on their way to work, some were working out,” Heinlein said. “They got the call and had to respond immediately.”

The SWAT team practiced coordinating their response with arena security officers. Role players acted out the scenario and created distractions as officers tried to figure out the threat.

SWAT has drilled at the Golden 1 Center before, but this training encompassed the area around it, which has many new buildings, Heinlein says.

“That’s why we train is we get to see those new areas,” he said. “We need to go inside and see where our access points are and identify all those

CF students practice skills with mock mass shooting drill

Criminal justice recruits moved through a smoky building Thursday on the College of Central Florida campus in packs of four. They surveyed the damage and called out numbers of injured or unresponsive mock victims.

“Put your hands up,” recruit Kayla McNeill yelled into a room where a few pretend victims lay on the floor covered in fake blood.

At this point, everyone is a suspect, explained Rod McGinnes, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program Manager for CF, of the activity.

About 60 students from the Criminal Justice, EMS and nursing programs participated in the mock mass casualty situation on campus. Another 40 students participated in the drill as mock victims, with varying levels of injuries. Dummies also were used in the activity.

Gun shots were created by throwing fireworks in a bucket and a smoke machine was used for enhanced effect.

Instructors watched as

First responders practice new approach to mass shooting incidents …

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — With students at home on Friday morning, teachers at both a high school and a middle school in upstate New York became the victims of a mass shooting in a drill designed to test new tactics in how police and paramedics would respond.

The drills gave staff at Niagara-Wheatfield High School and Edward Town Middle School a first-hand lesson on how to handle such an event. It was, in the words of Niagara-Wheatield School Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich, “Not a typical professional development day.”

The United States has a long and bloody history with school shootings. There are more mass shootings here than in any other nation, according to a CNN report last November. Since 2013, there have been over 300 school shootings, according to Every Town Research. Not every incident resulted in death or injury.

Up until now, mass shooting incidences have been handled almost exclusively by emergency response
