Judge refuses to release man held in mass shooting plot at Milwaukee Masonic center

A Milwaukee man the FBI says had planned a mass shooting but whose lawyers argue is merely a blowhard “Palestinian Walter Mitty” will remain jailed until his trial, a federal magistrate judge has ruled.

“It comes down to this,” wrote U.S. Magistrate Judge David E. Jones. “It should not take the spiritual guidance of two religious leaders to dissuade a person from committing mass murder.

“A person whose moral compass depends so heavily on the advice of others on such a  fundamental question of human decency presents an unacceptable risk.”

Samy Hamzeh, 25, has been detained since his arrest in January 2016 when he bought two machine guns and a silencer from undercover FBI agents after months of conversations Hamzeh had with a pair of FBI informants.

Most of the recorded talks were in Arabic, and

Rion Morgan

Tara Morgan wrote on Facebook that her brother was in Spencer and Meredith Hight’s wedding and had visited with Spencer, whom he considered a friend, the day before the tragedy.

According to Rion Morgan’s LinkedIn page, he worked as a manager for the University of Texas at Dallas help desk center.

“Rion Morgan’s passing is a tremendous loss to the University community,” university spokesman John Walls said in a prepared statement. “Rion has been a member of the UTD family since 2006; first as a student and then after he graduated, as a full-time employee in the Office of Information Technology. He was an exceptional employee and a warm, kind, generous colleague and friend. He will be dearly missed.”

Oregon authorities release ‘manifesto’ from mass shooting

When the mother of mass shooter Christopher Harper Mercer got an automated voicemail from her son’s college in Oregon about shots fired on campus, she first called the hospital. Then, she called the jail.

Finally, she checked his bedroom to see if any of his many guns were missing.

“I had thought too, well, just play a long shot and I’m just gonna like go check his inventory, his guns,” Laurel Harper told police after the shooting.

That long shot turned into a parent’s nightmare. By the time she left her son’s bedroom, authorities were unraveling police tape around her home.

They confirmed her suspicions: Her son was the shooter who had just killed nine people and wounded eight more at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg.

Douglas County authorities on Friday released a detailed report on the Oct. 1, 2015, mass shooting that includes a six-page,

Man charged in mass shooting plot in Milwaukee seeks release

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Lawyers for a man charged in a mass shooting plot in downtown Milwaukee say their client refused to participate when urged by FBI informants they say harassed him for months.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/2tBoKp9 ) reports that lawyers for 25-year-old Samy Mohamed Hamzeh claim entrapment in the case and have asked Hamzeh be released from jail on bail pending his February trial.

The motion comes after the defense reviewed hours of recently translated Arabic conversations the informants recorded.

“There is also no evidence that Hamzeh ever made any plans or was doing anything other than making empty boasts to express his resentment about Israel or to gain attention,” the brief in support of the bond motion said.

Hamzeh was arrested in 2016 on two counts of possessing a machine

Man charged in mass shooting plot in Milwaukee seeks release

MILWAUKEE — Lawyers for a man charged in a mass shooting plot in downtown Milwaukee say their client refused to participate when urged by FBI informants they say harassed him for months.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/2tBoKp9 ) reports that lawyers for 25-year-old Samy Mohamed Hamzeh claim entrapment in the case and have asked Hamzeh be released from jail on bail pending his February trial.

Hamzeh was arrested in 2016 on two counts of possessing a machine gun and one count of possessing a silencer, which he bought from undercover FBI agents. Federal prosecutors allege he was planning to kill at least 30 people at a Masonic center to “defend Islam.”

Federal public defenders say their client repeatedly protested the informants’ proposals and that he only wanted a legal handgun to protect himself.

Man charged in mass shooting plot at Milwaukee Masonic center seeks release

Sixteen months after the FBI announced it had thwarted a planned mass shooting in downtown Milwaukee, lawyers for the man charged in the plot say he adamantly refused to participate when pressed by informants they say had been goading their client for months.

The claim comes in a new court motion that Samy Mohamed  Hamzeh, 25, should be released on bail pending his trial, now set for February.

The motion reveals new details about the defense’s claim of entrapment, gleaned from hours of now-translated Arabic conversations the informants recorded.

His family says Hamzeh, who was born in the U.S. but lived much of his childhood in Jordan before moving to Milwaukee at age 19, was set up by the FBI.

The request for Hamzeh’s release says he is a U.S. citizen with no criminal record, a solid work history and

Orlando police release new body-camera video from Pulse nightclub shooting

The Orlando Police Department released 11 hours of new body camera footage on Wednesday from inside the Pulse nightclub on the night of the worst mass shooting in modern American history, almost one year ago.

The footage contains dramatic scenes of chaos and carnage as first responders tried to save the wounded and hunt down the shooter, who killed 49 people in the name of the Islamic State.

In a series of interviews before the release of the footage, broadcast Wednesday on “World News Tonight With David Muir” and “Nightline,” first responders and survivors told ABC News that the memories of that night and the emotions stirred by them are still raw.

“Several

Judge orders release of Orlando nightclub killer’s wife

The widow of Orlando mass killer Omar Mateen should be released from jail until she’s tried on charges of allegedly helped her murderous hubby, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

Noor Salman, 31, has been in custody since Jan. 16 when she was arrested in northern California on federal charges that include obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting her husband’s material support to ISIS.

Salman won’t be walking free immediately.

Oakland federal judge Donna Ryu stayed her own ruling for 48 hours, giving federal prosecutors a chance to appeal.

But if Ryu’s ruling stands, Salman would be under house arrest and wear an electronic ankle monitor.

Ryu said prosecutors couldn’t prove that Salman was a flight risk, a danger to the community or has any connections to ISIS.

Salman moved from Orlando to her uncle’s place in northern California after the Pulse nightclub massacre.

“I find at this time the weight of the evidence is debatable,”
