Families of victims of Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting settle lawsuit for $18 million

The families of the five Marysville-Pilchuck High School students shot on campus in 2014 have settled a lawsuit against the school district’s insurance company for $18 million, according to documents filed in Snohomish County Superior Court on Monday morning.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit alleging that a substitute teacher had been told of the possibility of a shooting but failed to alert school officials.

The settlement amount was determined by the cap of the district’s insurance policy, which was $20 million, said Lincoln Beauregard, the attorney representing the family.

“The plaintiffs elected not to pursue amounts that would erode the school district’s general budget that is designated for educating and protecting students,” Beauregard wrote in a settlement agreement.

“The facts of this case are tragic, and the errors that led

Skyview High School Mass Shooting Warning Scrawled On Bathroom Wall In Nampa, Idaho

A chilling school shooting warning was written in red ink on a Skyview High School bathroom wall in Nampa, Idaho. The note was discovered last Thursday, and the mass shooting was threatened to take place today.

“School will be shot up at 4-18-17 at 10:24 a.m. There will be a gang of 17 students doing this. They will target all the teachers and administrators first, then they will kill the students one by one,” the Skyview High School shooting warning message read. “All h**l will break lose. If you want to survive… Stay home!”

Skyview High School opened in 1996 and is the second public high school in Nampa, according to the district website.

BREAKING: Mass Shooting At San Bernardino Elementary School; UPDATE: Shooter Identified, One Child Has Also Died

We have disturbing reports coming out of California, where multiple people have been reported shot near an elementary school in San Bernardino, according to KTLA. The nearby California State University San Bernardino campus has been placed on lockdown. One of the victims is reportedly a child. The good news is that the local ABC News outlet—ABC7—is saying that the shooter is down, and that the situation is contained.

The San Bernardino attack is the 12th school shooting of 2017 — and the second in a week

Two adults and two other people, possibly children, were shot today at an elementary school in San Bernardino, Calif., in what authorities say they believe may have been a murder-suicide.

It’s the 12th school shooting of 2017, according to a running tally kept by Everytown for Gun Safety, a pro-gun-control group that sprang up in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Everytown’s criteria for inclusion in its count are broad. They include shootings that happen at colleges and universities, as well as at high schools and elementary schools. Accidental discharges — when a gun inadvertently goes off in someone’s pocket, for instance — are included as well.

Still, the tally gives some sense of

Harold Jordan of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Pennsylvania chapter is attempting to argue that the now-common practice of having armed school resource officers (SROs) on school campuses is a bad idea, but in doing so, he overtly lies (my bold below).

Sadly, while many communities explore how to improve school climates by building trusting relationships between adults and students, Pittsburgh debates the arming of school police.

A recent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial and a resolution adopted by the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers’ executive board both put forth troubling arguments that are at odds with what we know about school policing.

The most immediate impact of arming school police would be felt by students, as school-based police spend the bulk of their time interacting with students in nonemergency situations. Having officers patrol the hallways with

Marysville teacher may not have warned school before mass shooting, lawsuit claims

The substitute teacher who claimed she warned school officials of the impending mass shooting by a student at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in 2014 may have actually kept the information to herself and is “grief stricken” over the guilt, according to new documents in a lawsuit filed by the parents of the dead and injured students.

The disputed efforts by substitute teacher Rosemary Cooper to notify officials of the threat, including allegations that she never told anyone, will be argued in Snohomish County Superior Court on Friday at a hearing to determine whether Cooper remains a defendant in the lawsuit.

Her attorney, David Schoeggl, claims that Cooper is immune from liability because she made a good-faith effort to report the information she had. They have asked that Cooper be dismissed from the lawsuit,

Deputies find gun, ammo at house of girl reportedly plotting mass shooting at school

THURMONT, MD (AP) — Police in Maryland say a student accused of meticulously planning a mass shooting at her high school has been formally charged.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that 18-year-old Nicole Cevario of Thurmont was served with arrest warrants Friday. She is being held without bond.

Police last week had identified the woman as Nichole Cevario, but corrected the spelling of her first name on Friday.

She is charged with two felonies involving a destructive device.

Deputies say they found a shotgun, ammunition and bomb-making materials including nails and fireworks at Cevario’s home on March 23. Law enforcers had gone there after Cevario’s father reported he found evidence of the alleged plot.
