Seven Years After Gabby Giffords’ Shooting, Have We Learned Anything About Gun Violence?

The Safeway parking lot near Tucson, Arizona, was bustling on January 8th, 2011, as people lined up to participate in a “Congress on Your Corner” event with newly reelected Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. As the three-term Democrat began talking with constituents, a man opened fire on the crowd with a semiautomatic pistol, killing six people and severely injuring Giffords. Even in an era of nearly constant mass shootings, the attack on a sitting member of Congress stood out. It was followed with calls for more robust gun control.

Pandemics past: Seven times flu has become a mass killer

When flu goes pandemic, it can be devastating

Winter flu breaks out every year because small mutations in the flu virus let it dodge antibodies we made to protect us from the last flu we got. It isn’t totally different from that last flu, so we are partly immune, and the infection may be mild. But every now and then an influenza A virus breaks out carrying surface proteins that are very different. This “pandemic” flu spreads like wildfire regardless of the season – and often more, and younger, people die. Survivors do gain some immunity for next time, so the killer settles down and becomes regular seasonal flu, drifting along until the next pandemic flu surfaces.

LAS VEGAS — Dr. Kevin Menes had prepared for this moment, when terror came to his city and his hospital, but once it arrived he couldn’t believe it was true.

A radio used to alert the hospital to incoming casualties was blaring. Menes strained to understand. He heard someone say, Prepare for a mass casualty incident.

“Hey, is this real?” Menes asked, turning to a police officer passing through the emergency room. Maybe it was another drill meant to look real, with fake blood and screaming actors. Or one more false alarm, one more night Sunrise Hospital prepared for a panic that never arrived.

“Yeah, man,” the officer replied.

Menes sprinted toward his car.

Menes, 40, chose to

Goh’s plea deal calls for him to receive seven consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 271 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Horner on July 14.
