Cops jam a warrant into Apple to make it cough up Texas mass killer’s iPhone, iCloud files

Here we go again…

Texas Rangers have obtained a search warrant for the contents of a blood-splattered iPhone SE belonging to gunman Devin Kelley who killed 26 people in a murder-suicide at a church.

Over the weekend, the US state’s equivalent of the FBI served the Cupertino phone-flinger a warrant demanding photos, messages and other potential evidence on Kelley’s iPhone as well as those stored on its associated iCloud account. Investigators also have a warrant to extract data stored on Kelley’s second handset, an LG flip-phone. He was named as the shooter in the November 5 Sutherland Springs mass-murder.

At this point it is not known if the files sought can all be pulled from backups held in the iCloud account, or if some will need to be obtained directly from the iPhone. If the iPhone is locked and

Texas Bites Apple for Mass Killer’s iPhone Files

Authorities are demanding Apple turn over all photos, messages and documents that might have been stored on an iPhone belonging to Devin Patrick Kelley, the crazed gunman who shot dead 26 worshippers at a Texas church.

The Texas Rangers obtained search warrants for files stored on Kelley’s phone, which was discovered near his body after the Nov. 5th bloodbath at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, The San Antonio Express-News reports.

Those files kept may be stored in Kelley’s iCloud account, according to law enforcement officials.

An Apple spokesman told the Express-News the company does not comment on law enforcement matters.

The warrant comes as authorities continue to piece together the motives behind the mass shooting that stunned the nation.

During a church service, Kelley went aisle to aisle shooting victims — including crying babies — at point-blank range. He later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kelley is said to have had a history

Apple served with warrant in Texas mass shooting case — is another showdown with authorities in store?

Will Apple again find itself at odds with authorities in a high-profile case involving unlocking a gunman’s iPhone?

The gunman in the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas earlier this month was found with an iPhone, and Texas authorities have served Apple with a warrant seeking access to his information.

This might bring to mind another infamous mass shooting that thrust Apple and an iPhone into the spotlight — the 2015 San Bernardino attack in which Apple refused the FBI’s request to fashion a “back door” to unlock one of the shooters’ iPhones. The Silicon Valley giant’s reason: It did not want to compromise other iPhone users’ privacy and security.

Texas mass shooting highlights failings of military justice

Former airman Devin Kelley had choked his wife and put a gun to her head. He’d fractured her baby’s skull. He’d made threats to his commanders and he’d been committed to a mental hospital. Those acts foretold Kelley as a potential killer, experts say, and make the Air Force’s failure to enter his name into an FBI database especially egregious.

“You name it, he had every red flag they’ve been able to discern in the research,” said domestic violence expert Andrew Klein, who wrote a 2015 manual for probation officers on dealing with domestic violence offenders, including trying to predict future lethality. “He should have been on that database on three different levels.”

Kelley opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle inside a Texas church earlier this month, killing 25 and injuring 20 more, authorities say. He bought the weapon from a San Antonio gun store after
