Opioids A Greater Threat Than Nuclear Attack

Death by a foreign nuclear attack threatens, but horrifyingly, the United States’ largest mass killer is American-made and -distributed. Its nationwide body count in 2016 alone — 64,000 — surpasses the total U.S. troops killed in the 20-year Vietnam War. Already in Hawaii, an escalating number of people die of it each year, outpacing fatal auto crashes.

Its name is opioid — a class of painkillers that doctors often prescribe — and Hawaii’s statistics show we’re on pace to suffer the rampant consequences from the deadliest drug crisis to ever hit American soil, spreading faster than the HIV epidemic at its peak.

Gripped by this reality, we must push and support the state’s bipartisan Hawaii Opioid Initiative newly released last month, two legislative bills that I am introducing and heightened public awareness to protect ourselves.

Not a Saudi ‘Arab spring’: Mohammad Bin Salman, a threat not a reformer [Part 1]

was left of “star-columnist-and-best-selling-author” Tom
Friedman’s credibility as a serious reporter was most likely lost
in his November
23 NY Times’ infamous op-ed
, where he described crown prince
Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) as the Middle East’s “most significant”
liberal reformer, and the true reincarnation of the ‘Arab Spring’
after a long ‘Arab winter’. “At last”, as the title says, a
new Middle Eastern savior has been born, and Friedman ambitions to be
his messenger.

Despite
his three Pulitzer Prizes (for his already distant work of the 1980s
and 1990s), Friedman is probably the most overrated international
reporter in the western world. His best-selling books are essentially
lame

ABC Spends Last Day of 2017 Wailing About Trump’s Threat to First Amendment

ABC on Sunday spent the final day of 2017 whining about the term “fake news” and insisting that Donald Trump is a threat to the First Amendment. With no mention of the network’s demonstrably fake reporting, This Week guest host Martha Raddatz complained, “There was an attack on the media, on the First Amendment that we have not seen before, really, in this country… and the profound effect that can have. This is a President, as you know well, who likes attention from the media. On the other hand, he calls us fake news.”

USA Today’s Susan Page responded by lamenting, “Well, I’m very concerned as a citizen that a lot of Americans no longer trust the mainstream news media to be telling them the truth.” Again, there was no mention of the fact that ABC had to suspend correspondent Brian Ross for incorrectly reporting that candidate Donald Trump instructed

San Antonio Schools On Threat Of Mass Shooting: ‘We Take This Very Seriously’

The Sutherland Springs church shooting was a stark reminder that threats can happen anywhere, but San Antonio school officials say they have layers of protections in place already, starting with regular lockdown drills for students and teachers.

In a closet inside her office, Judson Independent School District Police Chief Teresa Ramon has a mini armory with helmets and bulletproof vests.

If a shooter threatens one of her schools, she’s ready to gear up and secure the perimeter.

Students and staff will hide behind locked doors, and her officers will follow their training to disarm the shooter.

“We want to make sure that we provide that safe and secure environment so parents and community members know that their child is safe when they come to school,” Ramon said, “that they don’t have to worry and say, ‘What’s going to happen today?’ ”

Ramon is president of the Texas School District Police Chief Association. She said

Teen admits to writing "kill list" in Santa Fe High shooting threat

A judge has decided one of the three teenagers accused of planning a mass shooting at Santa Fe High School will stay behind bars.

On Tuesday, a judge deemed 14-year-old Aaron Encinias too dangerous to be in public and ordered he stay at a youth detention center. He is facing charges of engaging in terrorist activity.

That same judge dismissed charges against the two other teens but the state could still refile charges down the road.

KOAT spoke to Encinias’ grandmother who spoke of the last conversation she had with her grandson.

“He goes grandma?’ and I go where are you and he said, ‘I’m in jail grandma’ I screwed up. I messed up. I got myself arrested,’” she said. “What can a grandmother say about their grandkid? But I never expected this from Aaron.”

Santa Fe police say Encinias and the two other teens wrote
